Northbrook Fire Department 2nd Alarm Life Safety Box Eastbound Spur East Of Waukegan Road 1 Semi And 8 Cars 1 Code Black 06/13/08 : In the wake of the second fatal wreck on the Edens spur in a month, Northbrook's fire chief said that if the state Toll Highway Authority doesn't make changes, no one should use the highway.

"I wouldn't let my family ride on it, and I would recommend that no one else do so, either," Chief Mark Nolan said.

Nolan spoke Friday afternoon after the latest horror on the highway that connects the Tri-State Tollway and the Edens Expressway. At about 11:30 a.m., one person was killed and 10 others were injured when a semitrailer truck plowed into stalled traffic on the eastbound Edens spur, according to local and state officials.

"A semi ran into several vehicles," Illinois State Police Sgt. Daniel Moore said. "In the initial crash, he went between the left lane and the right lane, right up the middle between the two lanes, then crossed over the median and into the (westbound) lanes, then back onto the median."

At least one westbound driver was among the injured.

Cars were crushed or hurled like toys by the powerful truck. Until 3 p.m., no Edens Expressway traffic was being allowed to enter the westbound spur, and all eastbound spur traffic was detoured onto Waukegan Road.

Mounting toll
"Typically, we have a few calls a year on the spur," Nolan said. "We've had six in a month: 24 injured, two dead."

The state police patrols the Tollway-owned highway, but Nolan's department is left to try to save the lives of those hurt there. Friday, Northbrook needed the help of 13 other departments to pry people from the truck and six cars. They treated and released four people on the scene, in addition to those they took to hospitals.

Among recent spur wrecks was another fatality May 15, a woman killed when a bus and two other vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes.

Two people were seriously hurt in a four-truck, three-car accident June 4 in the spur ramp's eastbound lanes, and June 5, a crash involving two semi-trailer trucks and a car, also in the eastbound lanes, injured two.

What to do?
"We've been on the state police (and) Tollway Authority and we've talked to them again today," frustrated Northbrook Village President Gene Marks said Friday. "They've got extra patrols, (electronic signs) out, and I don't know what else we can do. Traffic is backing up, and they're still driving like crazy.

"These trucks are flying, and all of a sudden, boom, they gotta stop."

Nolan agreed, saying drivers exiting the clogged Tri-State open up their throttles on the spur. But traffic backs up ahead of them quickly, and they have to stop -- if they can.

Previously, Northbrook officials begged for more electronic signs to warn spur drivers of the backup, but Friday's carnage convinced Nolan signs aren't enough.

"My recommendation to the Tollway Authority ... is to bring the eastbound spur down to one lane all the way from the Tri-State to the Edens," instead of two lanes, as it is for most of that stretch.

"You have to make this all one construction zone."

Tollway spokeswoman Joelle McGinnis said Friday, "The state police investigation has just started on this incident, and until (the state department of transportation), the Tollway and the state police understand what's happened here, there's nothing that can be done.

"What we can do now to improve conditions on the roadway in the short term is that people will just have to slow down and pay attention."

To Nolan, that's not enough, because innocent drivers who are paying attention are endangered by those who are not.
