December 21, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Chicago firefighters say water problems initially hampered their efforts to put out an extra-alarm fire at a Southwest Side warehouse in the 3700-block of West 38th Street.
The fire was raised to a 3-11 alarm before emergency crews got it under control. Because the building is in an industrial area, there aren't as many fire hydrants and the Chicago Fire Department brought in water.
Hazmat teams were called to the one-story building that houses a candy factory because there they believed propane tanks were inside the building. Those ended up being helium tanks, so no Hazmat materials were involved. San Jose Imports makes candy and party goods like piñatas and balloons.

The fire was contained to just the candy factory.

One person suffered minor burns but was treated at the scene. A firefighter also hurt a shoulder, but is OK.

A San Jose worker said there was some type of power surge and the power went off and on inside the plant. The employee heard sizzling and tried to put out a fire with an extinguisher while they called for help.

"They had some type of electrical fire in the ceiling where the lights went on went off," said Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff. "One of the employees tried to extinquish it, and it grew headway and was out of control by the time we got here. And we made sure all the employees were out. There were approximately 10 to 15 employees in there."

Kedzie Avenue remains closed as of 11 a.m. and power was cut by ComEd to about 200 customers in the area so emergency crews could work.
